Punjab Govt Orders Temporary Closure of Medical Institutions

Punjab Govt Orders Temporary Closure of Medical Institutions

Specialized Healthcare and Medical Education Department of the Punjab government has issued an announcement regarding the temporary closure of medical educational institutions throughout the province. According to this decision, all medical universities, medical and dental colleges, nursing colleges, and allied health sciences schools operating in Punjab will remain closed from March 10 to March 31, 2026. This step applies to both public sector and private sector institutions that function under the supervision and administrative authority of the department. Medical Universities and Colleges to Remain Closed Until End of March

An official notification released on March 9 confirms that these institutions must suspend their regular on-campus academic activities during the mentioned period. The directive covers a wide network of medical education facilities across Punjab and requires them to follow the instructions issued by the provincial authorities.

Although physical classes will not take place during this time, the notification clarifies that educational activities for certain students will continue through alternative arrangements. Students enrolled in the first and second year of the MBBS program will attend their classes online so that their academic progress is not disrupted. Educational institutions have been directed to ensure that virtual learning systems remain active and accessible for these students during the closure period.

At the same time, the order states that students studying in the third, fourth, and final years of the MBBS program will continue their academic schedule without interruption. Their regular classes, clinical rotations, and examinations will proceed according to the previously planned timetable. These senior students are required to maintain their attendance in hospitals and clinical departments where they receive practical training as part of their professional education.

Through this arrangement, the government aims to maintain continuity in medical education while temporarily restricting on-campus activities for certain classes. The decision ensures that essential training for senior medical students continues, particularly the clinical experience that is a critical component of their studies. Meanwhile, junior students will remain engaged in their academic programs through online learning platforms until institutions reopen at the end of March.
