Punjab Govt Announces Free Transport and Lunch for School Students

Lahore, July 2025 – In a major move to revolutionize public education, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has unveiled a broad range of initiatives aimed at improving educational access, infrastructure, and quality across the province. These bold reforms focus especially on underserved and remote areas, showcasing a commitment to making government schools better than private institutions.

One of the most notable announcements is the launch of “on-wheels Montessori schools” and a student van service for government schoolchildren. This initiative is designed to solve transportation challenges and ensure that early childhood education reaches even the most distant parts of Punjab.

During a high-level meeting of the School Education Department, the Chief Minister directed officials to finalize a structured school transport system—a first in Punjab’s history—to serve thousands of children who struggle with accessibility daily.

Outsourcing Success: Record Enrollment and Teacher Hiring

Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat reported that the school outsourcing model has seen a 99% surge in student enrollment and a 114% increase in teaching staff. More than 60,000 jobs have been created, making Punjab home to the largest education-based public-private partnership in the world, with 1.3 million students enrolled within just 16 months.

An additional 10,500 schools are set to be outsourced in the coming year, with 40,000 applicants already applying for 5,700 institutions during the first phase.

Massive Infrastructure Development

Under this transformation:

  • 413 new classrooms have been constructed.
  • Over 5,000 classrooms renovated, and 2,887 roofs repaired.
  • More than 250,000 sq. metres of boundary walls have been built.
  • 50+ schools converted to solar power.
  • Distribution of 1,643 water tanks, 5,830 water coolers, and 9,303 blackboards has improved basic amenities.

Feeding, Furnishing & Empowering Students

The government has also launched midday meal programs in districts like Faisalabad, providing nutritious food in partnership with communities. Over 70,000 furniture sets have been delivered to improve classroom experiences.

Furthermore, the PEEF Tech Schools initiative is rolling out technical institutions, with future expansion planned for rural areas. A special English Conversation Program, aligned with IELTS Level 4, will train over 300,000 students in six months.

Early Learning and Centres of Excellence

10,000 early childhood classrooms have been equipped, ensuring strong educational foundations. The Nawaz Sharif Centre of Excellence is being expanded to accommodate 1,500 students, and a new School Meal Programme is launching in several districts, offering items like milk, biscuits, and energy bars.

With plans to create 6,000 STEM labs, boost digital literacy, and rationalize staffing, Maryam Nawaz’s vision is clear: Public schools in Punjab will surpass private ones in quality, access, and opportunity.
