Punjab Expands School Privatization Program to 4500 More Institutions
The Punjab Education Department has announced that it will initiate the third phase of its school privatization program this December, transferring 4,500 government-run primary, middle, and high schools to private management. Third Phase of School Privatization Set to Begin in December
According to the new guidelines, all schools in the punjab with an enrollment of 100 students or fewer will be handed over to private operators. Education authorities have been directed to provide updated lists of these eligible schools. Teachers currently working in these institutions will either be reassigned to nearby schools or placed in the surplus pool. Notably, high schools are being included in the privatization process for the first time.
The move has faced sharp criticism from teacher organizations. Rana Liaqat, Secretary General of the Punjab Teachers uni on, Muhammad Shafiq Bhalowalia, Central Secretary of the Punjab SES Teachers uni on, and Busharat Iqbal Raja, President of the Educators Association, have all condemned the plan and called for its cancellation.
They cautioned that merging school privatization with teacher rationalization could significantly disrupt the education system. The uni on leaders emphasized that privatization could lead to higher fees and further weaken an already fragile public education network.
