Punjab Energy Crisis Austerity Measures 2026

Punjab Energy Crisis Austerity Measures 2026

Punjab is gearing up for a comprehensive austerity plan to combat the energy crisis as global oil supply issues push petroleum prices higher. The Punjab Energy Department has submitted a detailed set of proposals to provincial authorities, with the school holiday extension until April 15, 2026, being just one component.

The multi-pronged strategy focuses on cutting fuel and electricity usage across the board. Here are the key measures under active review:

  • Fuel Rationing: Introduction of a digital or coupon-based system for petrol and diesel distribution to ensure fair supply.
  • Shorter Market Hours: Curtailing commercial and market operating times to lower electricity demand.
  • Work From Home Mandate: Strict guidelines for private offices to adopt remote working and reduce daily commuting.
  • Boosted Public Transport: Expansion of Metro and bus services to encourage citizens to shift from private vehicles.
  • Ban On Non-Essential Events: Complete prohibition of unnecessary public gatherings and events to save energy.

These steps are directly linked to regional tensions affecting key shipping routes like the Strait of Hormuz, which have disrupted oil supplies and triggered potential rationing.

As of March 24, 2026, all suggestions are still under review and have not been officially notified as law. The current school holidays are scheduled to conclude at the end of March unless the proposal is approved.

The government emphasises that citizens should rely solely on official channels from the Punjab School Education Department and verified portals for updates. This energy-saving plan aims to safeguard the province’s resources during the ongoing global supply challenges while minimising disruption to daily life and education through the proposed hybrid learning option.
