Punjab Education Department Orders Temporary Closure of Schools

The Punjab School Education Department has released an official notification announcing that every public and private school in the province will remain closed from March 10 to March 31, 2026. This decision has been taken as part of efforts to reduce fuel consumption during a time of growing economic uncertainty. All Public and Private Schools to Remain Closed Until March 31
According to the notification issued on March 9, the provincial authorities considered the changing international circumstances and their possible economic consequences before making this decision. Officials noted that the ongoing global developments could potentially affect the supply of oil and create fuel shortages. As a precautionary measure, the government decided to temporarily suspend regular on-campus schooling activities across Punjab in order to help conserve fuel and manage available resources more efficiently.
During this period, students will not attend their schools physically. However, the department clarified that any examinations or assessments that were already planned will still take place according to the previously announced schedule. This means that students who are preparing for tests will still be required to appear in their examinations at the designated times and locations.
To ensure that learning continues despite the temporary closure of schools, the department has also encouraged educational institutions to make use of online teaching methods wherever possible. Schools that have the facilities and systems for digital learning have been advised to conduct classes through online platforms so that students can remain engaged with their studies while campuses remain closed.
The notification further instructed administrative authorities at the district level to strictly implement the decision. In particular, Chief Executive Officers of District Education Authorities have been directed to monitor the situation and make sure that all public and private schools follow the government’s instructions without exception. These officials are responsible for ensuring that the closure order is properly enforced across their respective districts.
Through this measure, the provincial government aims to balance educational continuity with the need to respond to broader economic challenges. While schools will temporarily suspend physical classes, efforts are being made to minimize disruption to students’ academic progress by maintaining scheduled examinations and promoting online learning options wherever possible.
