Punjab Government Responds to Choking Smog by Declaring School and Office Shutdown Amidst the persistent and suffocating smog crisis plaguing the province, especially Lahore, the caretaker government of Punjab has taken the step of announcing the temporary closure of schools and offices. CM Punjab Mohsin Naqvi Announces Closure

During a press conference held in Lahore, Mohsin Naqvi, the caretaker Chief Minister of Punjab, declared that schools and offices in areas severely affected by hazardous smog will remain shut on Friday, November 10th.

Specific Areas Affected by the Holiday 

The announced holiday will apply to educational institutions and offices located in the Lahore division, Gujranwala, Nankana Sahib, and Wazirabad and is scheduled for this week only.

Extended Shutdown Measures 

In addition to school and office closures, local markets are set to remain closed on the following Saturday, and businesses like hotels, parks, and cinemas will also observe closure on both Friday and Saturday, as opposed to their regular Sunday closure.

A recent study conducted by the University of Chicago has raised significant concerns among the residents of Lahore due to the citys alarming smog levels. The research reveals that the citys inhabitants are facing a substantial annual reduction in life expectancy, estimated at seven years. Furthermore, the study underscores the harmful impact of smog on children, comparing their exposure to current pollution levels to the equivalent of smoking 30 cigarettes daily.
