The Punjab government has made a significant announcement regarding an additional weekly holiday for both public and private schools. Smog Mitigation Efforts
Commissioner Lahore, Muhammad Ali Randhawa, has taken the initiative to close schools every Wednesday "until further notice" with the primary objective of mitigating smog. This move also comes with an accompanying directive for school staff to carry out their duties from the comfort of their homes.
City-Wide Shutdown
In addition to schools, this decision will also impact other sectors of society. Markets, banks, private institutions, clubs, and hotels are expected to remain closed every Wednesday, leading to a complete shutdown in Lahore on that day.
Environmental Concerns
Last week, the Lahore High Court LHC had issued a directive to halt all new construction projects for six months, from October to March, due to the escalating levels of air pollution.
Official Clarification
In contrast to earlier media reports, the Punjab government has stated that no final decisions have been reached at this point. The government has engaged a panel of experts to discuss strategies for reducing smog. The proposals put forth by these experts will be meticulously examined and deliberated upon during the upcoming Cabinet meeting.
The government of Punjab has also pointed out that the recent rain has led to the Air Quality Index AQI being under control. Nevertheless, a comprehensive plan for maintaining and enhancing the AQI will be determined following the Cabinet meeting.
