Punjab School Education Department is considering the removal of the Saturday holiday in schools as a way to make up for lost academic time caused by smog-related closures and other unscheduled breaks. Experts have pointed out that the academic year in Punjab has been significantly shortened to just 112 days due to frequent unscheduled holidays, well below the global standard of 245 days. Impact of Smog and Winter Vacations
The ongoing smog crisis poses an additional challenge, with schools being closed in early November due to poor air quality. Moreover, the extension of winter vacations in recent years has further compounded the issue. As December’s winter break approaches, the loss of teaching time is expected to increase.
Struggles with Education Delivery
Teachers and educational professionals have expressed concerns about the difficulty in making up for the lost academic time. The government has not mandated teachers to work during the holidays, and organizing online classes has proven to be difficult in these challenging conditions.
