Punjab Begins Privatizing Government Colleges After Schools

The students can check the detailed information of Punjab Begins Privatizing Government Colleges After Schools, Facing Strong Opposition.

Government Expands Privatization Drive to Colleges

Punjab currently has around 750 public colleges, and in the first phase, nearly 100 colleges—including both commerce colleges in Rawalpindi—are being handed over to private organizations. This move comes after the government already outsourced 12,500 public schools as part of its ongoing education privatization program.

Starting November 1, another 7,000 primary and middle schools, along with several high and higher secondary institutions, will be included in the next phase. Schools enrolling fewer than 100 students will be prioritized for outsourcing, while staffing structures will be adjusted according to the number of enrolled students.

Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat defended the decision, stating that the government cannot justify an annual expense of Rs. 300,000 per student in commerce colleges. He further announced plans to establish modern commerce colleges equipped with advanced laboratories and up to 400 computers to enhance educational quality and align with current technological standards.

The provincial government aims to finalize the privatization of schools and colleges by March 31, 2026, ahead of the new academic session. However, teachers’ associations have strongly opposed the move, declaring plans for strikes, sit-ins, and province-wide protests to resist the privatization policy.
