Private Schools Push Back on Government Mandate
The Punjab government has proposed a winter vacation period in December to tackle the ongoing smog crisis and cold weather. The plan aims to reduce health risks associated with the intense air pollution in the region, particularly affecting areas like the Potohar region and Murree, where air quality has sharply declined. Proposed Break Duration and Concerns
The government has suggested a 20-day holiday break, running until January 10, 2025, as confirmed by Punjab’s Secretary of Schools, Khalid Nazir Watoo. However, the Private Schools Association has voiced concerns over the length of the break and is pushing for a reconsideration of the holiday period.
Objections from Private Schools Association
Abrar Ahmed Khan, President of the All Pakistan Private Schools Association for North Punjab, criticized the proposal, citing the significant disruptions to the academic calendar already caused by extended summer vacations, smog-related closures, and public protests. He has suggested a shorter break, recommending just 10 days, starting from January 1, to minimize the impact on students education.
History of School Closures Due to Smog
Punjab has previously faced school closures because of severe smog, with Lahore and other districts experiencing several days of shutdowns last month as air pollution levels reached hazardous thresholds. This recurring issue of smog underscores the urgent need for long-term strategies to combat air pollution and safeguard public health.
