Private Schools Defy Govt Orders on Fee Hikes
Despite clear directives from the Punjab School Education Department and various regulatory bodies, many private educational institutions across Pakistan are reportedly implementing "arbitrary" fee hikes. As the 2026 session kicks off, parents have raised alarms over schools forcing the purchase of books and uniforms from designated vendors at inflated rates.
The Conflict Over School Fee Increases
Regulatory authorities like PEIRA have established policies limiting annual fee increases to 5%–8%. However, reports indicate that:
- Low-tier schools are charging Rs. 2,500 for admissions.
- Mid-range institutions have hiked admission fees to Rs. 15,000.
- Elite schools are demanding between Rs. 20,000 and Rs. 25,000 for new enrollments.
The Role of Inflation and Paper Costs
Publishers and school associations argue that the price hikes are a direct result of inflation and the soaring cost of raw materials. The NOC license fee for textbooks reportedly jumped from Rs. 20,000 to Rs. 150,000, a burden that is ultimately passed down to the consumer. Additionally, the imported paper crisis has made it nearly impossible to maintain previous price points for the 2026 academic year.
Government Intervention and Public Outcry
While the government has initiated some austerity measures and promised action against schools defying the ban on internal book sales, the ground reality remains challenging for the public.
- Mandatory Vendor Purchases: Schools continue to bypass the law by "recommending" specific high-priced shops.
- out Risks: Without a significant increase in the education budget or subsidies for textbooks, the out rate is expected to climb as families are forced to choose between groceries and schooling.
Education activists emphasize that until the government ensures the provision of free textbooks and strictly regulates private sector pricing, the dream of "Education for All" will remain hindered by the reality of the rising cost of living.
