PMDC Imposes Three Year Ban on New Medical Colleges
Islamabad - In a major policy decision, the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council PMDC has imposed a three-year ban on the registration of new medical colleges across the country. The move was announced during a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on National Health Services, chaired by Senator Aamir Waleeduddin.
According to PMDC officials, the decision stems from a critical shortage of qualified teaching faculty in existing medical institutions. PMDC President Dr. Rizwan Taj informed the committee that maintaining academic standards is a top priority, and opening new colleges without adequate staff would compromise the quality of medical education in Pakistan.
During the session, the PMDC Amendment Bill—introduced by Senator Humayun Mohmand—was also discussed. The bill proposes the inclusion of parliamentarians in the PMDC governing board. However, the Federal Health Minister Mustafa Kamal opposed the idea, stressing that political involvement could harm the institution’s credibility and the international reputation of Pakistani medical professionals.
The health minister further clarified that even he, despite his position, is not a member of the PMDC board, emphasizing its autonomy.
This ban is being seen as a bold but necessary step to protect the standards of medical education in Pakistan, ensuring future graduates meet both national and global expectations.
