Regulatory Authority Issues Clear Instructions on Fee Increases

Speaking to the media after a meeting with representatives of private schools on Friday, Acting PEIRA Chairman Dr. Ghulam Ali Mallah stated that schools are allowed to increase their fees by a maximum of five percent each year. He explained that an additional increase of up to three percent may only be approved in exceptional cases, and that too after schools provide proper justification supported by audited financial records.

Dr. Mallah made it clear that under no circumstances will schools be permitted to raise fees by more than eight percent in total. He emphasized that PEIRA will ensure strict enforcement of these regulations and monitor compliance by private schools operating in Islamabad.

The acting chairman also highlighted that private schools are required to offer free education to at least ten percent of students from financially disadvantaged families, with special consideration given to the children of martyrs. He encouraged parents to report any violations of the fee policy to PEIRA, assuring that action will be taken against institutions found to be overcharging.

In addition, Dr. Mallah said PEIRA is planning to take action against private schools functioning without registration in Islamabad. He noted that while approximately 1,500 schools are currently registered with the authority, a significant number continue to operate illegally without proper registration.

This directive comes in response to concerns raised by the National Assembly and a Senate standing committee regarding reports of unjustified and excessive fee hikes by several private schools.
