Parents & Students Demand for Early Summer Vacations

As Pakistan experiences its first intense heatwave of the season, concerned parents and students are urging provincial governments to announce summer vacations earlier than planned. The soaring temperatures and related health concerns have led to a growing public outcry for the immediate closure of schools to protect children from heat-related risks. The students can get latest updates of Calls for Early Summer Break Intensify Amid Severe Heatwave in Pakistan.
Meteorological Department Issues Heatwave Alert
The Pakistan Meteorological Department PMD has issued an alert forecasting a sharp rise in temperatures across various parts of the country. A persistent high-pressure system is expected to raise daytime temperatures by 4°C to 6°C in Sindh, southern Punjab, and Balochistan from May 15 to 20, creating potentially dangerous conditions.
Northern and Central Areas Also Affected
Regions in central and northern Pakistan, including Islamabad, upper Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir, are also bracing for extreme heat. The PMD warns that these areas may experience temperature increases ranging from 5°C to 7°C between May 15 and 19, adding to the urgency of the situation.
Authorities Consider Revising Vacation Schedule
Many parents have reached out to school administrators and voiced their concerns on social media, pushing for a change in the academic calendar. Currently, the Punjab government plans to observe summer vacations from June 1 to August 9, 2025, for public and private schools & colleges. However, School Education Secretary Khalid Nazir Wattoo stated that an earlier start is possible if heat levels continue to rise.
Possible Weather Relief for Upper Regions
Despite the heat, some relief may be on the horizon. According to PMD predictions, a westerly weather system could bring rain, thunderstorms, and even hail to parts of northern Pakistan—including Kashmir, Islamabad, the Pothohar region, northeast Punjab, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan—around May 19 or 20, potentially easing conditions in those areas.
