Pakistan School Education Costs Increase April 2026

The start of the new academic year on April 1 has brought significant financial distress to families across Pakistan. Recent market surveys reveal a sharp increase in the prices of essential school supplies, including textbooks, stationery, and uniforms. This surge is largely attributed to the rising costs of imported paper and the overall inflationary pressure on the manufacturing and retail sectors.

Breakdown of Rising Stationery and Textbook Prices

Booksellers have adjusted the prices for Class 1 to Matric textbooks, with hikes ranging between Rs. 100 and Rs. 500 per grade. The cost of stationery has seen an even more dramatic shift, with vendors increasing the prices of markers and colors by nearly 70 percent.

Practical Notebooks: Currently retailing between Rs. 1,500 and Rs. 2,500.
Standard Notebooks: Prices vary from Rs. 150 for basic quality to Rs. 500 for premium versions.
Calculators: Matric students are now facing costs between Rs. 3,000 and Rs. 5,000 for standard scientific models.

Skyhigh Costs for Uniforms and School Transport

The burden on parents extends beyond the classroom. School uniforms are now priced between Rs. 3,500 and Rs. 5,000, while quality school bags can cost as much as Rs. 7,000. Perhaps the most staggering increase is found in school transport services, where monthly pick-and- charges have surged by 100 to 150 percent. A service that previously cost Rs. 3,000 is now being quoted at Rs. 7,000, primarily due to the recent hike in fuel prices.

Private School Fee Structures and Hidden Costs

The private education sector has also adjusted its fee structures for the 2026 session. Low-tier schools are charging approximately Rs. 2,500 for admission and Rs. 1,500 monthly. In contrast, elite schools have set admission fees between Rs. 8,500 and Rs. 10,000.

A major point of contention for parents is the policy of many institutions forcing the purchase of uniforms and books from designated shops. This practice often prevents families from seeking affordable alternatives in the open market, further tightening the household budget during an already difficult economic period.

With the cost of living continuing to rise, many middle-income families are finding it nearly impossible to manage these upfront academic expenses. Educational experts warn that if education costs continue to climb at this rate, it may lead to an increase in student outs or a shift from private to government schools.
