Pakistan Bar Council Halts New Law College Affiliations for Three Years
The Pakistan Bar Council PBC has announced a three-year suspension on the affiliation of new law colleges with universities and degree-awarding institutions recognized by the council. The PBC warned that any violation of this ban could result in de-recognition of the offending institution. This action comes following an amendment to Rule 20 of the Pakistan Bar Council Legal Education Rules. According to the updated rule, from January 15, 2026, no Pakistani university or recognized degree-awarding body is allowed to grant affiliation to any law college until the three-year ban period ends.
In a press release on Thursday, the PBC Secretary confirmed that all registrars of universities and degree-awarding institutions nationwide have been formally notified about the amendment. Additionally, the chairpersons of law college affiliation committees have also received official communication regarding the change.
The council emphasized that any university or institution found affiliating law colleges in breach of this directive will face serious consequences, including de-recognition.
However, the PBC clarified that applications submitted before January 15, 2026, will continue to be processed under the current rules. No new affiliation requests will be accepted or considered during the three-year restriction.
