The Graduate School of Arts and Science at New York University NYU proudly offers a unique opportunity for prospective students through the Falak Sufi Scholarship, awarded within the master’s program in Near Eastern Studies at the Kevorkian Center. This prestigious scholarship not only honors the memory of Falak Sufi, a brilliant and compassionate scholar, but also supports students from South Asian countries with majority Islamic populations who aspire to pursue graduate education.

About the Falak Sufi Scholarship
Falak Sufi was a remarkable individual born in Pakistan in 1983. Known for her generosity, intellectual brilliance, and passionate commitment to social change, Falak graduated with first-class honors in Political Science from the National University of Singapore. Her academic interests spanned women and gender studies in South Asia, historiography, and the humanities. At NYU’s Kevorkian Center, she was a beloved graduate student in Near Eastern Studies before her untimely passing in 2008.

The Falak Sufi Scholarship honors her legacy by providing financial support to students—preferably female—enrolled in the two-year master’s program in Near Eastern Studies, including those pursuing joint degrees with Journalism, Museum Studies concentration, or the business track. Scholarship recipients are expected to embody Falak’s intellectual spirit and dedication to exploring gender roles and related issues in the Near East, Middle East, and South Asia.

What the Scholarship Covers
For the 2026-27 academic year, the scholarship includes:
An academic-year stipend minimum $33,702
Full tuition coverage

These benefits are offered for up to two years, contingent upon maintaining the Graduate School’s academic standards.
