New Matric & Inter Grading Policy Delayed in Punjab & Balochistan
The rollout of Pakistan’s new grading policy for matric and intermediate examinations faces delays in Punjab and Balochistan, which have yet to issue official notifications despite prior national-level approvals. The Inter Board Committee of Chairmen IBCC and the Inter-Provincial Education Ministers Conference had endorsed the policy for uniform application across all provinces and Azad Kashmir, beginning with the 2026 annual exams. Provincial Notifications Pending as Exams Approach
Under the updated system, passing marks for Classes 9 and 11 will rise from 33% to 40%, and new subject-wise passing criteria have been introduced. Education authorities emphasize that nationwide adoption is crucial for maintaining consistency, particularly in university admissions. Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Islamabad have already issued notifications and started preparations.
Dr. Ghulam Ali Mallah, Executive Director of the IBCC, warned that discrepancies in grading across provinces could cause problems in higher education admissions. Universities will create merit lists for undergraduate programs based on the new criteria, and any variation between provinces may lead to inconsistent evaluation standards. Officials stress that synchronized implementation is essential to prevent confusion for both students and educational institutions.
