More Than Half Million Students Unable to Pass Matric Exams in Pakistan
A report issued by the Inter Board Committee of Chairmen has revealed that over 500,000 students failed matric exams across Pakistan during the 2025 academic year, according to media reports. IBCC Report Highlights Rising Failure Rates and Concerns Over Education Quality
Punjab recorded the largest number of unsuccessful candidates in matric exams result, with more than 358,000 students failing to clear their matric exams. Among them, the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education Lahore alone reported 87,419 failed students.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, approximately 80,558 students out of 444,000 candidates did not pass the exams. Meanwhile, around 51,000 students failed in Sindh out of a total of 450,000 candidates. The Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education Quetta reported 9,797 failures among 78,839 students, while the Federal Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education stated that 15,798 students were unsuccessful out of nearly 137,000 candidates.
Education analysts described the statistics as evidence of serious shortcomings in academic preparation and teaching quality. Experts stressed that urgent improvements are needed in curriculum planning, classroom instruction, and teacher training to address the growing educational challenges.
