Medical and Dental Seats Increased for ICT Students

The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council PM&DC has welcomed a positive development for students with Islamabad Capital Territory ICT domiciles aspiring to pursue medical and dental education. The Punjab government’s decision to significantly increase the quota for ICT students in the province’s public medical and dental institutions for the academic year 2024-25 is being hailed as a major step forward. This move is seen as a response to longstanding concerns about the limited educational opportunities available to ICT students and is being commended for its commitment to fairness and inclusivity in medical education, as highlighted by the PM&DC.

Addressing Concerns Over Limited Quota for ICT Students

The issue came to the forefront when the Punjab government initially announced a drastic reduction in the allocated seats for ICT students. Under the 2024-25 admission policy, the quota was set at only three seats, a move that raised alarm among prospective students. The decision sparked widespread dissatisfaction and led to protests from the student community, prompting them to seek assistance from the PM&DC.

As a result of these concerns, intervention from PM&DC President Prof. Dr. Rizwan Taj, alongside other relevant bodies, became necessary to address the matter.

Collaborative Efforts Result in a Positive Change

In response to these concerns, the PM&DC, in partnership with the Ministry of National Health Services, the Standing Committee on Health, and other key stakeholders, initiated a review of the admission policy. Following a series of consultations and discussions, the Punjab government agreed to increase the ICT quota from three to 30 seats for the upcoming academic year.

This significant increase aims to ensure more equitable opportunities for ICT students aspiring to enter the medical and dental professions.

Promoting Equity and Inclusivity in Medical Education

Prof. Dr. Rizwan Taj emphasized that the revised quota is a crucial step in fostering fairness in access to medical education. "This increase is not just a win for ICT students but for the educational system as a whole, as it ensures a more inclusive and balanced approach to medical education," said Dr. Taj.

He also highlighted the broader implications of this decision, noting that it reflects the growing need for such measures, particularly in the context of the nation’s rapid population growth over recent years. Dr. Taj expressed his gratitude for the collaborative efforts of all involved stakeholders in bringing about this resolution.

PM&DCs Continued Commitment to National Educational Equity

The PM&DC reiterated its dedication to addressing inter-provincial admission policies and ensuring greater equity in the educational system. With the increase in ICT student seats, the PM&DC believes this policy shift will help reduce educational disparities across the country, paving the way for a fairer and more inclusive academic environment for all.
