KP University Takes Disciplinary Action Over Anthem Controversy
The administration of Bacha Khan University has expelled four students after a performance at a university event sparked intense criticism and public reaction. The incident occurred during the institution’s annual two-day festival, where a group of pharmacy students sang the national anthem of India and raised related slogans. Four Students Dismissed After Campus Festival Performance
Recordings of the performance quickly spread on social media, leading to widespread backlash from viewers and student groups across Pakistan. The circulating videos prompted protests and strong demands for strict disciplinary measures. Various student organizations labeled the act inappropriate and staged demonstrations on campus, expressing support for national unity and solidarity.
One of the students involved, Jibran Riaz, issued a video statement explaining that the act was intended solely for entertainment purposes. He maintained that the performance was similar to students playing or enjoying foreign songs at university gatherings and denied any political motives or affiliations behind it.
However, the university’s disciplinary committee examined the issue in its 73rd meeting and recommended strict action. Following the committee’s advice, the administration decided to expel the four students, all of whom were enrolled in the Faculty of Pharmacy.
In an official statement, the university stated that the performance on campus had the potential to create unrest and negatively affect national harmony, particularly after the footage went viral online. Along with expulsion, the students’ hostel accommodations were revoked, and they were instructed to vacate their rooms immediately.
