KP Plans to Introduce Semester System in Private Schools

Provincial Authorities Aim to Align Private Schools with Govt Education Structure

The semester-based system was first introduced in government schools last year for students up to grade 8, replacing the traditional annual Exams method. Education officials believe the change has helped reduce academic pressure on both students and teachers.

According to officials from the education department, one of the major reasons behind extending the semester system to private schools is the difficulty students faced while transferring between private and public institutions. This problem emerged because private schools continued following the annual Exams schedule, whereas government schools shifted to the semester structure.

At present, most private schools conduct their final annual exams in March and start the new academic session in April. On the other hand, government schools operating under the semester system complete their Exams by the end of May. The difference in academic calendars created adjustment issues for transferring students.

Managing Director of the PSRA, Javed Iqbal, stated that the proposal was approved unanimously during a recent board meeting, including support from representatives of private educational institutions. He added that a committee formed by the Elementary and Secondary Education Department would determine the timeline and strategy for implementing the new system.

Meanwhile, Education Secretary Mohammad Khalid said the semester system had shown encouraging results in government schools. He explained that introducing the same structure in private institutions would help lessen academic stress, improve learning continuity, and reduce educational losses caused by long school vacations.
