KP Introduces Labeled Textbooks to Fight Piracy & Ensure Quality
To combat widespread piracy and ensure quality education, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Textbook Board KPTBB has implemented a new system of advanced security labels on all school textbooks. These tamper-evident labels feature sophisticated verification elements, enabling teachers, parents, booksellers, and authorities to easily distinguish genuine KPTBB textbooks from often substandard counterfeit copies.
Piracy has significantly impacted the KPTBB, which distributes millions of textbooks annually. Chairman Abidullah Kakakhel noted that pirated books, sold cheaply, contain errors, poor printing, and weak bindings, harming student learning and costing the board financially, hindering reinvestment in education.
The multi-layered labeling system, applied throughout production and distribution, includes features like holographic images, unique serial numbers, and QR codes. These labels will be present on both new and existing textbooks, and distributors/booksellers are required to verify them. Legal action will be taken against those selling unlabeled or counterfeit textbooks.
Analysts anticipate multiple benefits: improved textbook quality for students, secured financial resources for the KPTBB, respect for intellectual property, and enhanced oversight of textbook distribution. The KPTBB will launch awareness campaigns to educate stakeholders about authenticating textbooks and will collaborate with schools to replace counterfeit materials. This initiative secures educational resources, combats piracy, and raises academic standards, serving as a model for other Pakistani textbook boards..
