Karachi Schools and Colleges Closed Amid Heavy Rains
The Sindh government has announced the closure of all private and government schools and colleges in Karachi on Wednesday, August 20, 2025. This decision has been taken due to severe urban flooding and persistent rainfall, which have disrupted normal life across various parts of the city. Sindh Education Minister Sardar Shah confirmed the announcement after reviewing recommendations from city authorities monitoring the situation. Monsoon Rains Paralyze Karachi
Continuous heavy monsoon rains over the last 48 hours have caused widespread waterlogging in several key areas, including Gulistan-e-Johar, Korangi, Nazimabad, and Gulshan-e-Hadeed. Major roads such as Shahrah-e-Faisal, MA Jinnah Road, and University Road are facing partial or complete closures due to accumulated rainwater. The Pakistan Meteorological Department has also warned of further rainfall in the coming days, raising concerns about prolonged flooding and increasing traffic hazards.
Authorities Launch Relief Efforts
City authorities have begun drainage and relief operations to reduce the impact of flooding. Emergency response teams and pumping units are being deployed to clear waterlogged roads and restore accessibility in affected areas. Officials have advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel and stay cautious, especially near flooded locations, until the situation improves.
Safety Measures for Students and Citizens
The closure of schools and colleges is a precautionary step to ensure the safety of students and educational staff. Many localities are experiencing power outages, blocked roads, and immobilized vehicles, making travel difficult and hazardous. Authorities have stated that while the closure is currently for one day, they will reassess the weather situation and may extend the shutdown if required.
