Karachi Board to Make Major Changes to Exam Papers 2026 Updates

Karachi Board to Make Major Changes to Exam Papers 2026 Updates

The Board of Secondary Education Karachi BSEK has announced a significant overhaul of its examination system, moving away from traditional rote-based testing toward a model that prioritizes conceptual understanding. The decision was finalized during a high-level meeting chaired by BSEK Chairman Ghulam Hussain Soho, involving paper setters for core subjects including English, Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.

The reform is part of a broader effort to align the local examination standards with modern educational s and to foster analytical thinking among students.

Key Changes to the Examination Format

Concept-Based Questions: Future papers will shift from memorization-heavy questions to those that evaluate a students ability to apply knowledge and solve problems.
Balanced Weightage: The board will ensure a more scientific distribution of marks across different difficulty levels and topics.
Marking Rubrics: To increase transparency and fairness, clearer marking rubrics will be introduced, providing examiners with precise criteria for grading student responses.
Question Bank: The board is developing a comprehensive bank of "concept-based" questions to be used for future examinations.

Impact on Academic Standards

Chairman Soho emphasized that a conceptual system will not only strengthen the intellectual development of students but also naturally discourage the culture of cheating. By focusing on "Higher Order Thinking" HOT skills, the board aims to prepare students better for professional and higher education challenges.

To ensure quality and transparency, the paper-setting process will now be conducted under the direct supervision of the BSEK Chairman and the Controller of Examinations.

E-Marking and New Grading System

These changes follow earlier 2026 reforms announced by the board, which include:
E-Marking Implementation: The adoption of an IT-based e-marking system for key subjects like Mathematics to eliminate manual errors and calculation discrepancies.
New Passing Marks: A recent increase in the minimum passing marks from 33% to 40%.
Revised Grades: The introduction of a new grading structure where a "U grade" replaces the "Fail" status for those scoring below the 40% threshold.

Revised Exam Schedule

Following provincial directives, the Sindh educational boards have also adjusted the upcoming exam calendar. To accommodate the Easter holidays, no examination papers will be held between April 2 and April 6, 2026. The matriculation examinations are now set to resume from April 7, 2026.
