Program Details and Funding

The program, expected to launch in fiscal year 2026, will offer financial support to approximately 20 students on a trial basis. It will cover both tuition fees and living expenses. The Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia, based in Indonesia, will be responsible for recruiting applicants for the initiative.

Language Training and Medical Education

Before beginning their medical studies in Japan, selected students will undergo Japanese language training in their home countries. Afterward, they will be enrolled in six-year medical programs at Japanese universities with the goal of obtaining a doctor’s license.

Budget Allocation and Ongoing Discussions

A budget of ¥290 million has been allocated for this initiative in Japan’s supplementary fiscal year 2024 budget. Discussions are ongoing regarding the specific countries eligible for the program and the universities that will participate.

Targeted Countries and Future Impact

The program mainly targets students from countries like Vietnam, with the expectation that these students will return to their home countries to practice medicine under certain conditions. Currently, international medical students make up less than 1% of Japan’s medical school enrollment.
