HEC Orders Fresh Verification of Thousands of Student Degrees
Higher Education Commission has decided to conduct a fresh review of the academic records of 36,931 students who were enrolled at unauthorized university campuses. The verification process will be carried out independently to ensure transparency and accuracy in evaluating the students’ educational credentials. Independent Committee to Review Academic Records and Modernize Attestation System
The decision was made during the 46th meeting of the commission, which was chaired by Dr. Niaz Ahmad Akhtar. Following the meeting, HEC announced that a separate committee made up of experts from outside the commission would be established to reassess the records of students whose documents had earlier been considered complete.
According to HEC officials, the commission itself will only provide administrative and secretariat assistance to the newly formed committee. Some members of the commission, however, reportedly expressed disagreement with certain aspects of the decision and submitted dissenting opinions during the meeting.
The commission also discussed cases involving graduates whose degrees had previously been attested by HEC but whose verification status was later suspended. This action was taken after it was discovered that those students had studied in various degree programs and courses at campuses that were not officially authorized. The meeting concluded that these cases would also be reviewed again by the independent committee before any final decisions are made.
Alongside the verification process, HEC approved significant reforms in its degree attestation and equivalence procedures. The commission decided to replace the traditional physical attestation method with a completely digital and evidence-based verification system aimed at improving efficiency and reducing complications.
In another important move, HEC removed the requirement for applicants to submit their previous or later academic qualifications when applying for degree attestation. The updated system is expected to simplify procedures for students and graduates while making the verification process more modern and transparent.
