HEC Mandated to Overhaul University Degree Across Pakistan
The Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives has issued a pivotal directive to the Higher Education Commission HEC of Pakistan, calling for an immediate and comprehensive review of all university degree programs and curricula. This policy shift is aimed at modernizing the national education landscape to keep pace with the Industrial Revolution 4.0. By evaluating existing academic structures, the government intends to phase out outdated models and replace them with future-oriented disciplines that prioritize innovation, entrepreneurship, and national competitiveness.
Strategic Focus on Employability and Future Skills
The directive emphasizes that Pakistan’s economic future relies on the ability of its universities to produce graduates equipped with skills relevant to a technology-driven market. HEC is tasked with auditing programs based on their industry relevance, employability, and technological alignment. The government is pushing for the integration of AI literacy, digital skills, and data analytics across all disciplines. As traditional job markets evolve, the goal is to ensure that students are trained in emerging fields—including Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, Robotics, and FinTech—to meet both local labor market requirements and global standards.
Shaping a Knowledge-Based Economic Transformation
To support this transformation, HEC will establish a high-level ‘Future Skills and Curriculum Transformation Task Force,’ bringing together academic experts and industry leaders. Within the next 60 days, the commission is expected to present a national audit framework and a roadmap to align educational outcomes with Pakistan’s goal of becoming a one-trillion-dollar economy. This reform, central to the broader human capital development agenda, underscores a commitment to quality, ensuring that every degree serves as a gateway to meaningful professional contributions and technological advancement in an increasingly competitive global landscape.
