First Online Balochi Dictionary “Labzganj” Launched
In a historic step toward the preservation and digital growth of regional languages, the first-ever comprehensive online dictionary of the Balochi language, titled “Labzganj”, has been officially launched and made available to the public.
The landmark project has been developed by the Balochi Academy Quetta under its Natural Language Processing NLP initiative, making it the most extensive digital lexical resource ever created for the Balochi language.
According to officials, Labzganj contains more than 40,000 words, each provided with meanings and equivalents in Balochi, English, Urdu, and Brahvi. This multilingual structure makes the platform highly useful for students, researchers, linguists, translators, and language learners across the globe.
Speaking at the launch ceremony, Habitan Umar, Chairman of the Balochi Academy and Coordinator of the NLP Balochi Project, said the initiative is the result of decades of scholarly efforts. He acknowledged the foundational work of renowned linguists including Jan Muhammad Dashti, Dr. Naseer Dashti, and Panah Baloch, whose earlier dictionary contributions paved the way for modern Balochi lexicography.
Language experts and academics have welcomed Labzganj as a major breakthrough for a language that has historically depended on oral transmission with limited written documentation. The digital dictionary is expected to play a vital role in standardising Balochi, strengthening research, and promoting language learning in the digital era.
