Court Criticizes Punjab Govt Over Extended Summer Vacations
The Lahore High Court’s Rawalpindi Bench expressed displeasure with the Punjab government over its decision to prolong summer vacations. Justice Jawadul Hassan conducted the preliminary hearing of a writ petition filed by student Daniyal through his lawyer, Hafiz Waqar Ahmed Awan, challenging the extension of school holidays until August 31. High Court Questions Justification for Prolonged Holidays
The petitioner’s counsel argued that the Punjab Education Department had unnecessarily prolonged the summer break. He maintained that, under Section 12D of the Punjab Private Educational Institutions Act 1984, only the District Education Authority can declare vacations during emergencies. He added that suspending academic activities for three consecutive months endangers students’ future.
During proceedings, Justice Jawadul Hassan showed stern displeasure over the decision and admitted the petition for regular hearing. He questioned the grounds on which vacations were extended, stressing that even during wartime, courts functioned without interruption. He remarked that schools are repeatedly closed under different excuses, such as fog and extreme heat, which deprives children of their fundamental right to education.
The judge further noted that parents invest heavily in their children’s schooling and such measures compromise educational standards. The court issued notices to the Punjab Secretary of Education and other concerned departments, demanding clarification on the matter while strongly criticizing the decision to extend vacations.
