China’s Higher Education AI Era Overhaul by Cutting Degrees
China is undertaking a massive restructuring of its higher education system at MA level to remain competitive in the rapidly evolving global landscape. To address shifting economic priorities and prepare the workforce for the AI era, authorities have significantly streamlined academic offerings. Between 2021 and 2025, Chinese universities underwent a major education reform, revoking or suspending 12,200 undergraduate programs. This decisive action represents a fundamental shift in academic curriculum strategy, impacting over 30% of total university programs nationwide to ensure alignment with industrial demands.
Prioritizing Emerging Technologies and Employment
The institutional cleanup primarily targeted traditional arts, Chinese Universities humanities education, and management disciplines, which experts identified as oversaturated in today’s challenging job market. Replacing these are 10,200 newly launched programs explicitly designed to support Beijing’s objective of becoming a global leader in advanced technologies. Universities are heavily pivoting toward STEM education and AI-related fields, such as embodied intelligence, to bridge the gap between academic output and graduate employment outcomes.
