Canada Relaxes Flexibility and Broader Choices for International Students

The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada IRCC has introduced significant changes to the English language test requirements for students applying through the Study Direct Stream SDS program. These modifications, effective from August 10, 2023, offer applicants a wider range of acceptable English proficiency exams to choose from. New Options for English Language Tests

Under the updated regulations, students now have the option to submit their English language results from a variety of recognized tests. The acceptable language proficiency exams include the Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program CELPIP General, Canadian Academic English Language CAEL Test, Pearson Test of English PTE Academic, and Test of English as a Foreign Language TOEFL iBT.

Flexibility and Broader Choices for International Students

This expansion in acceptable tests provides international students with increased flexibility and broader choices when demonstrating their English language proficiency. Particularly, the inclusion of PTE and TOEFL, which are widely recognized in Canada and other countries, opens up new avenues for students planning to study in destinations such as Australia, the USA, New Zealand, and many universities in the UK.

The recognition of PTE and TOEFL as acceptable English language tests underscores their credibility and acceptance within the international education community. Modified Requirement for IELTS Academic Test Takers

In addition to expanding the options, the IRCC has made changes to the requirement for IELTS Academic test takers. Previously, applicants had to achieve a minimum score of 6.0 in all individual bands of the test. However, this specific requirement is no longer mandatory. Instead, students are now only required to achieve a minimum overall band score of 6.0, without any prescribed minimum scores for the individual skills Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking.
